MS Outdoor Club Activities & Events:
Upcoming Trips & Activities with the Mississippi Outdoor Club:
Information about Camping at two different parks - If you have any information about camping at either Burnside Lake or Neshoba Lake, please let me know by calling at 601-924-3689 or jrestes@bellsouth.net. We have had a member ask about these two parks but there is little info rmation about them. If you have camped there, please pass that information along.
Animated Knot Tying Website - If you've ever had questions about how to tie various knots, here is a great site to go to for great information. http://www.animatedknots.com/
Further Training on Hot Air Balloon Crew Training - The hot air balloon pilot that provided some great training for club members last weekend for ground crew work is interested in doing a second training session if there is interest. The pilot will be needing ground crew assistance during the Canton Hot Air Balloon Festival on Friday July 4th and Saturday July 5th in Canton. If you're interested in training and/or participation in the event on July 4th and/or 5th, contact Tim Slattery at tslatts@bellsouth.net and/or Larry Estes at jrestes@bellsouth.net.
September 11- We're participating with the Florida Sport Paddling Club in developing a trip to Utah on the Green River in southeast Utah. The Green River offers what is considered by many to be the premier calm water float trip in America. The information we have at this time includes: Drive to Moab, Utah, rent or carry boats,
outfitter is Tex's Riverways (http://www.texsriverways.com/) who will do the shuttle, water-drop, and pickup, put-on the Green River for five or nine day trip. This trip is on flat/moving water through Labyrinth
and Stillwater Canyons on the Green River with good near riverhiking, Indian paintings, old mines, and old cabins. Trip is limited to 10 paddlers and you need to let us know if you're interested as
soon as possible. For more information on this trip, contact Larry Estes at 601-924-3689 or jrestes@bellsouth.net.
Quapaw Canoe Company Discount to Members: John Ruskey at Quapaw Canoe
Company in Clarksdale wanted to let us know that he will offer a 10%
discount to club members on any of his trips down the Mississippi River.
Quapaw Canoe Company is a Business Level member of the club.

40th Anniversary of the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act: The WSRA was passed into
law in 1968 by President Lyndon Johnson. According from information from
American Whitewater (http://www.americanwhitewater.org/), the Act 1)
protects outstanding natural, cultural, or recreational values, 2) requires
the creation of a comprehensive river management plan, 3) ensures water
quality is maintained, and 4) prohibits dams and other federally assisted
water projects that would adversely affect river values. A section of
Black Creek in south Mississippi is protected under this act.
Balloon Ground Crew Training: We are in conversation with the
Mid-Mississippi Balloon Club about future training workshops for balloon
ground crews. As you know ground crew members eventually cycle around to
flying in the balloon. Tim Slattery, an owner/pilot of a balloon said they
would invite additional crew to join them when they fly. They normally
train crew when they show up at one of their flights but he said they can
set up a crew training session specifically for a group. If you're a MS
Outdoor Club member and would be interested in taking some training to be a
ground crew member with a balloon owner in Mississippi, please let me know.
For additional information about the Mid-Missisippi Balloon Club visit their website at
http://www.msballoonchamps.org/
Skiing and Snowboarding Trips (2009 and beyond): We have several people in
the club who have been going on annual skiing and snowboarding trips -
mainly to Utah. Rhea and Larry Estes recently returned with 8 other
friends from a fun week long trip to snowy Utah. If we have a sufficient
number of club members interested in skiing and/or snowboarding - including
a workshop or two, there is a distinct possibility of coordinating one or
more trips in 2009. The club could receive some excellent discounts in
airline and lodging rates if we have 20 or more participants in a ski trip.
We are also encouraging a local skier in the Jackson area to come on board
with the club to assist in coordinating future skiing and snowboarding
trips for the club. If you and friends have an interest in participating
in a 2009 ski/snowboarding trip, let us know.
Adventure Racing: John Collins, a club member, notified us about a
website related to adventure racing. He would like to form a team(s) to
participate in future adventure races. The website is
http://www.gulfcoastadventure.com/. This looks pretty interesting so if
you're interested in forming a team and participate in one or more of the
challenges being planned, contact John at 601-502-3589 or
johncollins82@yahoo.com.
Used Backpacking Equipment Donation: Boy Scout Troop 88 in Clinton is
looking for some used backpacks for some of their scouts. If anyone has a
backpack that they think would fit a young boy scout, contact Scoutmaster
Robert Sugg at 601-427-0619 or rtsugg@tracyhsugg.com.
We need additional trip coordinators: We need more members to come forward
and help lead trips whether it is a day hike, backpacking trip, sailing on
the reservoir, or day/overnight paddle on a stream. If anyone would like
to lead a trip(s) for the club, please give Larry Estes a call at
601-924-3689 or e-mail at jrestes@bellsouth.net.
Gear Sales/Wants & Trip Photos: We still have a lot of gear on the Club's
website so check out the items that are posted there. Please don't forget
to check this page out if you want to sell or buy some equipment.
Club Committee Chairs Needed: We need to secure some volunteers for
several committees. Recently Sage Hooey volunteered to be our Club's
Membership Chair and Karla Steckler is now our Newsletter Editor. But we
still need someone to be the Programs Chair and Special Events Chair.
These volunteer positions will not take a lot of your time and will help
spread the duties and activities to some other people within the club.
Please consider helping out.
Renew Your Club Membership On-line: Don't forget that you can now join or
renew your membership on-line through the secure site on PayPal. If you do
not have a PayPal account already established, consider setting one up -
